Everything you need to know about The Meg 2 (2024)

Meg 2: The Trench has now swum into cinemas to bring giant bloody sharks back to our screens.

While the first movie wasn't exactly a success with the critics (something the sequel has in common), it was a huge hit at the box office, making more than $500 million worldwide.

A sequel was announced by executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying in November 2018 as a result.

We've had to wait a while for that to swim to our screens, but the sequel is now in cinemas and looking to take a bite out of the competition. So now that it's arrived, here's everything you need to know about Meg 2.

While there might be a third movie, Meg 2: The Trench does not have a post-credit scene to tease any future Meg antics.

There's no credit scenes of any kind, so you can leave as soon as the credits roll.

Meg 2: The Trench runs for a confirmed 115 minutes and 31 seconds, or just over one hour and 55 minutes if you prefer.

That makes it (slightly) longer than The Meg which had a runtime of 113 minutes and 6 seconds, giving you an extra two minutes or so of shark-chomping action.

As mentioned above, Meg 2: The Trench has now been unleashed in cinemas and is available to watch right now.

It's been five years since the first movie, so hopefully if we get another movie, we won't have to wait as long for our next bite of Statham vs shark action.

Filming on the sequel took place from February to May 2022.

Jason Statham is, of course, back as the formerly-disgraced rescue diver Jonas Taylor, but his love interest will be missing as Li Bingbing isn't returning as Suyin.

Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai and Page Kennedy are all returning though as James 'Mac' Mackreides, Meiying and DJ, respectively.

Newcomers for the sequel include Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Wu Jing, the highest-grossing male actor of all time in China. But will any of them be chum for the Megs?

Behind the scenes, Ben Wheatley has directed the sequel which was written by the same trio as the first movie: Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber.

An official synopsis has been released and confirms Wheatley's tease back in April 2021 that there could be more giant sharks in the sequel.

The synopsis reads: "Get ready for the ultimate adrenaline rush this summer in Meg 2: The Trench, a literally larger-than-life thrill ride that supersizes the 2018 blockbuster and takes the action to higher heights and even greater depths with multiple massive Megs and so much more!

"Dive into uncharted waters with Jason Statham and global action icon Wu Jing as they lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival.

"Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse pounding race against time."

That's all we know for the moment, though elements from Steve Alten's novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror (that was the basis for the first movie) and the book sequel called The Trench could be used.

The original movie wasn't a faithful adaptation of the book though as that featured a pregnant megalodon.

In the book sequel, Jonas is looking after that shark's offspring, which has now grown to a giant size, leading to another battle between shark and man after Jonas turns to an eccentric billionaire for help.

The first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench arrived in May 2023, giving us a first look at Jason Statham's Jonas exploring the ocean floor with his team and discovering a mega Meg, before lots of other creatures rise up from the deep with it and turn happy beach goers into monster munchies.
